Team USA Aims for Second Straight Gold at World Team Trophy
As the excitement builds for the ISU World Team Trophy 2025, set to take place April 17-20 in Tokyo, Japan, Team USA is driven to secure its second consecutive gold medal in this prestigious figure skating competition. Following a historic performance at the World Championships, where they amassed medals and accolades, Team USA heads into the event brimming with confidence.
The World Team Trophy, inaugurated in 2009, showcases the top national skating teams, and Team USA has consistently dominated the event, capturing gold in five of its eight iterations. With two women, two men, one pairs team, and one ice dance couple representing the nation, each skater’s performance in the short programs and free skates contributes to a collective goal of securing the highest points for the team.
This year, Team USA faces tough competitors, including Canada, France, Georgia, Italy, and Japan. Highlights for Team USA include three celebrated World champions competing: Madison Chock and Evan Bates in ice dance, and Alysa Liu and Ilia Malinin in singles. Chock and Bates recently made history, becoming the first U.S. ice dance team to earn three world titles in a row.
Alysa Liu, returning from retirement, showed astonishing prowess by becoming the first U.S. woman to clinch gold at the World Championships since 2006. For Liu, the World Team Trophy marks an important milestone in her comeback journey.
The men’s team features glittering talents, including Jason Brown, the team captain and two-time Olympian, alongside the sensational Ilia Malinin, who is riding a wave of momentum after consecutive golds. Both Brown and Malinin aim to repeat the triumph achieved in 2023.
Pairs representation comes from Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov, who recently claimed the national title. Competition kicks off on Thursday with the rhythm dance and continues through Saturday’s climactic free skates.
Fans can catch all the action streamed live on Peacock, with content available for on-demand viewing afterward. For live results and detailed updates, the U.S. Figure Skating Fan Zone remains the ultimate destination this season.
