Skate America kicked off Friday night in spectacular fashion as Kazuki Tomono, the talented Japanese figure skater, delivered a mesmerizing short program. With an impressive score of 95.77 points, Tomono not only took the lead over French skater Kevin Aymoz but also recorded his best short program score in over three years.

The event, hosted in Lake Placid, New York, saw Tomono execute challenging elements with finesse, including a flawless quad toe-triple toe combo and powerful quad salchow. The audience erupted into applause when he completed a stellar triple axel. “It felt amazing to be back at my best,” Tomono expressed, clearly overcoming the pressures of competing for a spot in the Winter Olympics this February.

Aymoz, a veteran with six French championships to his name, put on an emotional performance echoing a bounce-back spirit after a tough outing at Skate Canada. Ending with 93.56 points, he showcased resilience overcoming a lingering foot injury that had previously threatened his performance.

But the new face of athletic talent was Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan, who, although struggling with components, landed crucial quads that earned him 89.67 points, leaving him within reach of challenging for the podium. Italy’s Daniel Grassl and American Jason Brown rounded out a tightly contested field, placing fourth and fifth, respectively.

In tandem sport, the dynamic duo Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava continued their thrilling rise, put forth an electric routine to “Bolero,” landing a season-best of 78.83 points. Their precision during side-by-side triple salchows wowed judges and fans alike. They outperformed Japan’s world champions, Miura and Kihara, who faced setbacks with a 74.42 score due to a critical jump miscalculation.

With medals at stake, the men’s and pairs competitions will culminate Saturday night as excitement builds during this prestigious Grand Prix event. Prospects for the women’s short program and ice dance competition add further intrigue to an already sizzling Skate America lineup.
