Figure skating queen Yuna Kim looks forward to Milano Cortina 2026: “Italy has always been a country I’ve loved.”
In an exclusive interview, the ‘figure skating queen’ Yuna Kim sent a heartfelt message of support to competing athletes while reflecting on her illustrious competition days in Italy. Kim, often referred to as the ‘Queen of Figure Skating,’ has an extensive history with Turin, competing there twice and achieving remarkable success.
In 2007, she triumphed at the ISU Grand Prix Final, followed by a stellar performance at the 2010 World Championships in the same city. Despite facing challenges in her short program, resulting in a seventh-place finish, Kim showcased her incredible talent by winning the free skate segment, ultimately claiming the silver medal.
“I competed in Torino twice,” Kim reminisced in a recent exclusive interview from Seoul. “In 2010, I participated in the World Championships just a month after the Olympics, so it was exhausting but meaningful to close the Olympic season on that note. Italy has always been a country I’ve loved, even beyond my competitive years. I would love to visit again.”
With less than 200 days to go until the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, Kim has her sights firmly set on the event’s excitement.
“Many athletes from various sports are eager to perform well at Milano Cortina 2026. I support them fully and hope for injury-free preparations so they can deliver their best performances on an unforgettable stage,” Kim said enthusiastically. Although figure skating remains high on her list, she is also keen to witness stellar events in short track speed skating and snowboard halfpipe.
“I look forward to spectacular skiing events as well,” she added, showing her broad enthusiasm for winter sports.
Inspired by Michelle Kwan at the Nagano 1998 Olympics, Kim’s path to Olympic glory was paved by Kwan’s captivating performances. “I dreamed of performing at the Olympics after watching,” Kim stated, tracing the roots of her motivation.
Now a beacon of inspiration herself, Kim is committed to guiding younger skaters from the Republic of Korea. “Rather than offering immediate advice, I emphasize the importance of taking processes step by step while competing,” she explained.
Although she acknowledges the nerves associated with competition, Kim is unwavering in her belief in the current generation of athletes. “They’re doing a great job,” she concluded, radiant with pride for the next wave of figure skating talent.
