Double The Sparkle. Double The Spins
Skating has long been considered a family affair, and such was the scene at the recent Greater Chicagoland Fall Invitational. Held in early September, this exciting event witnessed a remarkable lineup of four sets of twins competing within the intermediate women’s division. With unexpected twirls and double the dazzling performances, spectators certainly had their fair share of surprises.
Among the star performers were Quinn and Harlow Cushing, 14, from Mount Prospect, Illinois. Proud members of the Chicago Figure Skating Club, the Cushing twins train diligently under the guidance of renowned coaches, honing their skills under watchful eyes. “Being involved in skating with my sister is incredibly fun,” Harlow shared. “We have different strengths and often help each other improve.” Her twin, Quinn, echoed this sentiment, explaining that their competitive routines complement their shared interests. “It’s nice to share this journey, even though we approach competitions individually,” she noted.
Not far behind were 16-year-olds Ellie and Viv Flaks from Geneva, Illinois. They initially commenced their skating adventures a year apart, igniting a bond strengthened through shared experiences at the Northern Ice Figure Skating Club. “Ellie makes me better and vice versa,” said Viv, highlighting their immense support for one another. Their mother, Chrissa, emphasized that the unspoken connection between the sisters is felt from the stands while watching them skate, adding to the thrill of their performances.
Then we have 13-year-old twins Mari and Ellie Flores hailing from Peoria, Illinois, where their mother Jenni coaches them both. “When I compete, it’s comforting knowing my sister is there, being my biggest supporter,” Mari remarked. The mutual encouragement provides a solid foundation that enhances their performance on the ice.
Finally, it was 12-year-olds Olivia and Sophia Hu, training at the Detroit Figure Skating Club. While their styles may diverge thanks to different choreographers, the duo shares an enduring connection through their competitive spirit. “Having Sophia by my side has drawn us closer. This relationship inspires us to be the best versions of ourselves,” Olivia said.
Each twin duo reflects the vibrant community surrounding professional figure skating, infusing the sport with both competition and camaraderie. Skating, they reveal, is more than just a sport; it’s a platform for developing life skills and cherished memories shared together.
