Team USA Aims for Third Straight Gold at World Team Trophy
The excitement in the figure skating world is palpable as Team USA heads to Tokyo for the ISU World Team Trophy 2025, scheduled for April 17-20. Fresh off their historic success at the World Championships, where they brought home a record number of medals, Team USA is gunning for its third consecutive gold medal at this prestigious event. With a remarkable track record, the U.S. has medaled in every World Team Trophy since 2009 and will seek to add to its total of five gold medals.
This year marks the eighth edition of the World Team Trophy, in which Team USA will face fierce competitors including Canada, France, Georgia, Italy, and Japan. The format features six teams, each represented by two women, two men, a pairs team, and an ice dance team. Points are tallied based on placements in the short program, rhythm dance, free skate, and free dance. The team with the most points at the end of the competition will claim victory.
Leading Team USA’s charge are three World champions: Madison Chock and Evan Bates, along with Alysa Liu and Ilia Malinin. Chock and Bates are making headlines after being the first U.S. ice dance team to secure three World titles, making them a formidable duo to watch in Tokyo. Their impressive achievements at the near-month World Championships in Boston set new world records for their scores.
Alysa Liu, who returned from retirement, also achieved remarkable success with a gold medal in her first World Championships since 2006. Further amplifying Team USA’s strengths, Amber Glenn returns after playing a critical role in securing gold last year.
The men’s side features Ilia Malinin, known for his unmatched jumping ability and recent consecutive World titles, along with returning captain Jason Brown, who aims for his third World Team Trophy gold after strong finishes in earlier competitions.
This exciting competition begins Thursday, with streaming available on Peacock for fans eager to follow the action. For live updates, scores, and more details, be sure to check the U.S. Figure Skating Fan Zone. Don’t miss Team USA as they aim to make history once again!
