Stephen Gogolev leads after short program at Canadian figure skating championships

In a thrilling display of athleticism and artistry, Stephen Gogolev has firmly placed himself in the forefront of the men’s singles competition at the 2023 Canadian Figure Skating Championships held in Gatineau, Quebec. The 21-year-old skater from Toronto dazzled the audience and judges alike with an impressive score of 99.60 points during Friday’s short program, affirming his strong presence in the figure skating realm.

Skating to a captivating rendition of the “Mugzy’s Move” medley, Gogolev executed two quad jumps and a magnificent triple axel, showcasing not just his technical skill but also his artistry on the ice at the Centre Slush Puppie. This performance has positioned him not only as a medallist but also as a contender for Canada’s sole men’s singles berth at the upcoming Milan Cortina Olympics.

Following closely behind Gogolev was Wesley Chiu from Vancouver, who earned a commendable score of 89.14, taking second place. Aleksa Rakic of New Westminster, British Columbia, secured third with a score of 83.60. Despite being a co-favourite with Gogolev, reigning national champion Roman Sadovsky found himself in fourth place with 81.79 after an uneven performance. Sadovsky faltered on a triple axel, losing valuable points by touching his hands to the ice during a combination.

Looking ahead, all eyes will be on the free program scheduled for Saturday, which promises to be a defining moment in the championships. The full Olympic team will be announced on Sunday evening, solidifying the path for Canada’s figure skating future.

Can Canadian figure skating bounce back before the Olympics? That remains a focal point as competitors pour their hearts onto the ice, with dreams of glory motivating their every move.
