Figure Skating: Shin Jia edges Amber Glenn in close Nebelhorn Trophy short program duel

The Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf, Germany, served up a thrilling display of figure skating on September 25, as South Korea’s Shin Jia, 17, narrowly led a competitive field in the women’s short program. With a score of 74.47, Shin eclipsed Amber Glenn, 25, who secured second place with a score of 73.69. Just behind them was the skilled American, Isabeau Levito, 18, with a solid score of 71.10, positioning her for a fierce showdown in the upcoming free skate.

The short program saw Japan’s Chiba Mone, the 2025 world bronze medallist, place fourth, earning 69.24 points. As competitors took the ice, Shin made her mark with an enchanting performance set to Chopin, flawlessly executing a triple Lutz, triple toe loop combination, and a crisp double Axel. Her final jump, a triple flip, showcased her high-level prowess.

“I am very happy to have achieved my new personal best,” said Shin during a post-performance interview. “This is my second senior competition, and it’s exciting to skate alongside established skaters like Amber Glenn.”

Competing earlier in the day, Glenn brought the energy with a stirring interpretation of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.” She opened strong with a flawless triple Axel and followed with a challenging triple flip, triple toe loop combination. However, a slightly shaky landing on a triple loop created a minor setback.

Despite the misstep, Glenn remains focused on her season’s growth. “Last season, I started with a lot of energy but struggled towards the end,” she reflected. “This year, I aim to take a measured approach. Overall, I feel satisfied with this strong start, even if the loop wasn’t perfect.”

This exciting close matchup sets the stage for an electrifying showdown in the free skate, where the competitors will aim for crucial points in this Olympic season.
