Figure Skating – ISU Junior Grand Prix Final 2025: Shimada Mao Cruises to Record Fourth Consecutive Women’s Title

In an outstanding display of talent, Shimada Mao added yet another feather to her cap by capturing an unprecedented fourth consecutive title at the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final held in Nagoya, Japan, on 5 December.

The 17-year-old figure skating phenom showcased her sublime skills and determination, clinching victory with an impressive season-best score of 218.13. This commanding victory saw her outperform the runner-up, Kim Yujae of the Republic of Korea, by a notable margin of nearly 20 points, with Kim finishing at 198.66 following a free skate performance of 144.68.

Making her debut at the Grand Prix Final, Shimada’s compatriot Okada Mei took home the bronze medal, securing a total of 195.82 points, although she landed fifth in the free skate segment.

“The season up to this point has been difficult so this makes me really happy,” expressed Shimada, reflecting on the emotional weight of her achievement. “Plus it’s at home. This is the most rewarding of the Finals I’ve won.”

Despite a stumble on her quadruple toeloop, Shimada was undeterred, displaying unmatched focus as she delivered a stellar program highlighted by a triple Axel. The final scores illustrated the competition’s stark difference, with Shimada solidifying her dominance.

Looking ahead, Shimada is focusing her efforts on the upcoming Japanese national championships in two weeks, where she anticipates competing against senior athletes for a spot at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.

While she remains ineligible for the upcoming Olympics due to age restrictions, Shimada’s excitement is palpable. “Four years ago I was just a spectator but this time I’ll be on the same ice as them,” she remarked. “I want to soak up the atmosphere and use it when my time comes to try and qualify for the Olympics.”

The ISU Junior Grand Prix Final not only highlighted the remarkable talent of Shimada Mao but also showcased the depth and competitive spirit of the next generation of figure skaters.
