Figure skating – Cup of China 2025: Japan’s Sato Shun flies as he repeats as men’s champion

In a stunning display of skill and artistry, Sato Shun emerged victorious at the men’s event of the 2025 Cup of China on Saturday, October 25, held in the vibrant city of Chongqing, People’s Republic of China. The 21-year-old Japanese skater delivered a flawless performance that not only secured his title for a second consecutive year but also marked his return to the winner’s circle after a long wait.

Sato finished the competition with a season-best score of 278.12 points, seizing the lead after a strong short program and maintaining his advantage through a squeaky clean free skate. This impressive score narrowly missed his personal best by just seven points and was a notable improvement of almost 33 points over his previous season best.

Italian skater Daniel Grassl claimed the silver medal with a total of 269.43, showcasing his talent but ultimately falling short of challenging Sato’s commanding lead. Mikhail Shaidorov from Kazakhstan made an impressive run for bronze, finishing the event with a score of 262.67.

While clean performances were rare, Sato Shun’s program undoubtedly captivated the audience as he executed all his planned jumps impeccably, including a spectacular quadruple toeloop-triple toeloop combo. The emotional weight of the win washed over him as tears of joy flowed, marking a triumphant return to form that establishes Sato as a strong contender in the run-up to the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics.

Japan’s promising star has not only revitalized his own season but has also sent a clear message to his competitors: he is ready to take on the world. As the competitive season unfolds, all eyes will be on Sato Shun, whose artistry and leaps may just redefine the future of men’s figure skating.
