In a thrilling display of athleticism and artistry, Sato Shun soared to the top of the standings after the short program at the 2025 Grand Prix Cup of China held in Chongqing on Friday, October 24. The Japanese figure skater mesmerized the audience with a flawless performance that earned him an impressive score of 94.13 points, placing him firmly in first.

Shun’s routine marked a significant achievement as he successfully surpassed strong competitors like Daniel Grassl of Italy and Mikhail Shaidorov from Kazakhstan, both of whom also delivered commendable performances. Grassl, aiming to secure a place on Team Italy for the upcoming Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Games, opened the competition with a strong showing. Despite a slight under-rotation on his initial quad Lutz, he recovered well with a clean quad loop and a triple Axel, finishing his short program with a score of 90.42, good enough for second place.

Shaidorov, who brought home a silver medal from the 2025 World Championships, struggled with an under-rotated quad Lutz in his combination jump as well. His final score of 88.33 puts him in a competitive third position.

Another notable performance came from the talented two-time Olympian Cha Junhwan, representing the Republic of Korea. Unfortunately, his routine was marred by errors, including a popped combination jump, leading to a disappointing score of 75.61 that placed him in a lower seventh position.

The event set the stage for an electrifying free skate on Saturday, where all eyes will be on how these top contenders will adapt and push themselves. The compelling performances in Chongqing highlight the fierce competition present in the world of professional figure skating as athletes strive for glory at the prestigious Grand Prix level.

As the world of figure skating closely watches, fans are eager to see if Sato Shun can maintain his lead or if challengers like Grassl and Shaidorov will rise to the occasion during the thrilling conclusion of this premier event.
