Figure skating at Winter Olympics 2026: Sara Conti and Niccolò Macii see bright side and new costume opportunities in post-injury comeback
Italy’s own Sara Conti and Niccolò Macii are gearing up for an unforgettable experience at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina 2026, despite a setback caused by a knee injury. The dynamic figure skating pair, who are world bronze medallists, were disappointed to have to miss weeks of training due to Conti’s ligamental injury. However, they believe this forced break may have provided them with a necessary reset before their Olympic debut.
Stepping onto the ice on February 6 for the team event, Conti will proudly wear a knee brace—a distinctive addition to her costume that she humorously contemplates decorating with rhinestones. “I don’t feel safe without it,” Conti admitted, noting that she plans to cover the brace with a nude stocking to complement her outfits—one of which features a sparkling light blue design.
Back on the ice for training, both athletes are ready to tackle their challenging routines, despite ongoing discomfort during specific jumps. “The first Salchow that I did today, I turned to my coach and I was like, ‘Aaargh,’” Conti expressed, highlighting the pain during some of their required elements. Yet, she was quick to point out that the rest of her performance feels strong and confident.
Macii, embodying a more optimistic view, noted something important: “The good thing is that if she does it properly, then she doesn’t feel pain.” This mentality supports their mental preparation heading into the event. They stopped practicing their newly planned choreography after Conti’s injury, but the time off also afforded them a chance to recharge.
Reflecting on the hustle of their pre-Olympic training regime that closely followed the demanding trip to Asia for important competitions, both athletes expressed gratitude for the unexpected pause: “It helped us to calm down a little bit,” Macii stated. With determination, they aim to capitalize on this refreshing perspective as they approach the competition, ready to showcase their hard work amid the thrills of home ice.
As the Winter Olympics draw closer, Conti and Macii continue to adapt their game plan, emerging stronger and eager to impress upon their Olympic debut. Fans and experts alike will be eagerly awaiting their performance, hoping to witness how this audacious pair navigates both challenges and triumphs on the prestigious stage.
