Figure Skating – ISU CS Kinoshita Group Cup 2025: Sakamoto Kaori opens final season with fourth in short program
The world of figure skating drew its breath at the Kinoshita Group Cup 2025 as three-time world champion Sakamoto Kaori embarked on her final competitive season. However, it wasn’t the start she envisioned. Skating to Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman’s emotionally charged “Time to Say Goodbye,” Sakamoto faced her first hurdle while competing in the women’s short program on September 5, finishing with a score of 65.25, which settled her in fourth place.
Leading the pack was fellow Japanese contestant Chiba Mone, who dazzled the audience with an impressive performance that garnered her a score of 73.11—just shy of her personal best. Chiba deftly navigated through her elements and managed only a minor deduction on her triple lutz.
Miyake Saki, another standout Japanese skater, secured second position with 70.29 points, showcasing remarkable technique and artistry. Canada’s Madeline Schizas claimed the third spot after a thrilling skate, scoring 66.57. The competition saw prominent United States skater Bradie Tennell finish fifth with 64.52, while world silver medallist Lee Haein finished seventh with 59.39.
Sakamoto’s performance was met with understanding from the athlete herself. After experiencing difficulties with her triple flip-triple toe loop combo, she reflected on her score, acknowledging that her performance was on par with her recent training sessions. “Well within expectations,” Sakamoto stated, revealing insights into her struggles leading into the competition. “I haven’t been able to put together a clean skate in practice, and it mirrored today’s performance.”
The celebrated skater has ambitious plans for improvement and—while aware of her placement—remains focused on her ultimate goal of excelling at the upcoming Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics. The challenges of this season are met with resolve, assuring fans that she aims to shake off any rust and elevate her performance levels substantially.
As the Kinoshita Group Cup progresses, spectators are eager to see how Sakamoto adjusts and pens her final chapter in the world of elite figure skating.
