The ISU Grand Prix Final 2025 in Nagoya is shaping up to be a pivotal moment for figure skater Sakamoto Kaori, as she prepares for her fifth and final appearance in this prestigious competition. Emphasizing her desire for a triumphant exit, the three-time world champion aims to showcase her best performances, especially after recognizing past shortcomings.
“I’ve had the opportunity to compete at the Grand Prix Final several times, but there hasn’t been one that I am completely satisfied with,” Kaori admitted in a press conference ahead of her scheduled practice on December 3rd. “I’ve always made mistakes, and this time, I aim for two flawless skates.”
Joining her at this year’s finale is a strong contingent of Japanese talent, including Chiba Mone, Watanabe Rinka, and the youthful Nakai Ami. Additionally, American skaters Alysa Liu and Amber Glenn will bring an international flair to the event, rounding out an exciting field.
After securing the gold in the 2023 Final, Sakamoto took bronze last season. With three competitions left in her professional career, she has set her sights on performing exceptionally in Nagoya and utilizing that momentum leading into the upcoming Japan nationals. These nationals will assess the Japanese team for the Olympics in Milano Cortina 2026, adding extra pressure to excel in her final performances.
“I need to be among the top two here for Olympic qualification, so my focus must be laser-sharp,” she emphasized. “The importance of this event is profound, but post-competition health is crucial as well.”
Feeling rejuvenated compared to previous years, Kaori stated her confidence is on the rise due to her consistent training and preparation. Reflecting on last year’s Grand Prix Final, she described it as frustrating, underscoring her intention to seek payback.
As the Olympic season kicks into high gear, Sakamoto understands that improved performances are non-negotiable. She remains committed to executing her best when it counts the most, staying focused on her path amid the excitement of competitive figure skating.
