Past President Ron Hershberger Passes Away

Ron Hershberger, the 29th president of U.S. Figure Skating and a stalwart member of the Board of Directors, has sadly passed away on September 4, 2025, at the age of 91. His lasting influence on the sport has left a remarkable legacy that will be remembered by many.

Hershberger and his wife, Gayle, stepped into the world of figure skating in the 1980s when their daughters, Alison and Rhonda, took up the sport. The Hershberger family quickly became integral to the Peninsula Skating Club in California, contributing not only to local activities but also establishing a foothold at the national level.

As an attorney, he showcased outstanding leadership in 1992 when he spearheaded the campaign to host the World Figure Skating Championships in Oakland, California, overcoming obstacles that once appeared insurmountable. “He just plugged away and was able to get Worlds here in 1992,” said Alison Hershberger in a 2009 interview, which reflects his determination and dedication to the sport.

Serving as president from 2005 to 2009 during a time of turmoil, Hershberger helped stabilize U.S. Figure Skating by bringing together the fractured organization. His commitment often extended beyond merely administrative duties; he infused a spirit of unity and passion for the sport. “It’s been a huge honor, one of the highlights of my life to have served in this capacity,” Hershberger remarked. His stewardship left a significant imprint on the organization.

Under his leadership, U.S. Figure Skating experienced four transformative years. Former executive director David Raith commended, “Ron has done a wonderful job in leading and representing this organization. His character and fairness are exemplary.” The Hershbengers also established an award to recognize musicality and artistry in a junior competitor at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, ensuring that these core values continue to thrive within the sport.

A full obituary will be published in the Fall 2025 insert at the beginning of October, paying homage to a true figure skating champion.
