ISU Figure Skating European Championships 2026: Niina Petrokina on track to defend women’s title

In a thrilling start to the ISU Figure Skating European Championships 2026, Niina Petrokina showcased her remarkable resilience by securing the top spot after an impressive short program in Sheffield on Wednesday. The 23-year-old Estonian skater scored an impressive 70.61 points, placing her ahead of her rivals, including Belgian newcomer Nina Pinzarrone and Italian sensation Anna Pezzetta, who are striving to make their mark on this prestigious event.

Petrokina, fresh from her recovery following Achilles surgery, displayed remarkable fortitude during her performance. This marks her first overseas competition since her injury, making her lead of 5.64 points over Pinzarrone all the more significant as she heads into the free skate scheduled for Friday. Last year’s bronze medallist, Pinzarrone, stands poised at 64.97 points.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Italian Anna Pezzetta, who has garnered attention for her poise and skill, currently occupies the third position at 64.85 points. However, the seasoned competitor Loena Hendrickx, the reigning European champion from Belgium, faced an unfortunate setback when she fell during her attempt at a challenging triple flip-triple toe loop combination, leaving her in fifth place with 63.34 points.

This championship holds considerable significance for Niina Petrokina, as she became the first Estonian to clinch a European title in the history of the sport shortly before her injury. Following her triumph in Tallinn, she overcame the odds posed by past health struggles, including a battle with severe aplastic anemia detected in 2020. “The beginning of the season was really challenging, but I am proud of the work I did with my team,” shared Petrokina.

Pinzarrone also made headlines with her comeback story, having fractured her toe prior to the events. “I am super happy to be back competing,” she stated, underlining the arduous process she underwent to join this competitive arena again. The championships continue to showcase not only athletic prowess but also inspiring narratives of resilience and determination.
