Figure skating – NHK Trophy 2025: Maia/Alex Shibutani finish sixth after free dance; Fear/Gibson top podium

At the NHK Trophy in Osaka on November 8, Maia and Alex Shibutani, affectionately known as the “Shib Sibs,” made a highly anticipated return to competitive figure skating, placing sixth overall in their first event in seven years. The pair showcased their heart and artistry, particularly in the free dance, where they earned fifth place with a score of 108.76, culminating in a total score of 180.50.

Despite a spirited performance set to Coldplay’s “Fix You,” which they had last performed a decade ago, they were unable to reach the podium. Fear/Gibson clinched the top spot, revealing the strength of their 205.88 total, followed closely by Italy’s Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri at 198.67 and the American duo Caroline Green and Michael Parsons third with 187.90 total points.

Maia’s voice quivered with emotion as she reflected on their comeback since their impressive performances at the Beijing 2022 Olympics. “I am incredibly proud of our performance today and the way Alex and I have handled this entire week,” she expressed. “This was our first competition in front of an audience since 2019, and to experience that again was unforgettable.”

Though the Shibutanis were disappointed with their scores, they recognized this competition as a vital stepping stone. “We will take the next steps forward because that’s all we can do,” Alex remarked, emphasizing their dedication to continual improvement both on ice and in life. They plan to compete next at the Finlandia Trophy in two weeks ahead of the US Nationals in January.

On the other hand, Fear/Gibson celebrated their successful run, scoring another victory following their silver at the Grand Prix de France. “We are proud of the competitions so far this season,” Gibson commented. “Our training has significantly evolved, and we aim to build upon our momentum for the rest of the season.”

In light of these remarkable performances, figure skating enthusiasts and fans eagerly await the upcoming competitions, as the Shibutanis and Fear/Gibson continue their journeys toward excellence.
