After unimaginable loss, Maxim Naumow delivers heartfelt skate at Winter Olympics 2026
For U.S. figure skater Maxim Naumov, competing at the Winter Olympics 2026 feels like destiny, especially in light of the personal turmoil he’s faced over the past year. Born to two-time Olympians Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, Maxim is no stranger to the rink, having skated since childhood. However, tragedy struck last January when both his parents tragically perished in a plane accident.
On February 10th, Naumov stepped onto the ice for the first time in the Olympics in Milano. Against all odds, he captured the hearts of fans with a performance that was unmarked by anxiety or pressure. “I had this feeling of calmness and stillness and just confidence,” he expressed, earning an impressive season’s best score of 85.65.
This newfound serenity, as Naumov explained, was significantly influenced by the memory of his parents. He held onto a cherished photo that depicts him at the age of three, already starting his skating journey with his world champion parents. “It felt like I was guided,” he shared, describing a sense of their presence supporting him through every element of his routine.
As he skated, Naumov felt a remarkable calm take hold, which allowed him to execute a flawless performance. “I felt like I was guided, like a hand on my back pushing me forward,” he said. “That overall calmness… it was unlike anything I felt before.” With each spin, he aimed to honor their legacy and the teachings they instilled in him from an early age.
“I just really hope I make them proud,” Naumov stated, invoking the spirit of his late parents who served as his role models. “They’re my superheroes, my biggest support system.” Armed with their wisdom, he aims to continue showcasing both skill and grace throughout the competition, displaying an exemplary portrait of resilience and passion in the world of professional figure skating.
