Figure skating – Loena Hendrickx at NHK Trophy 2025: ‘It might be the last season’
The figure skating world is abuzz with uncertainty as Loena Hendrickx, the talented 26-year-old Belgian skater, has hinted that her current season could be her last. Taking place in Osaka, Japan, ahead of the NHK Trophy, Hendrickx expressed her thoughts on potentially retiring post-Olympic Winter Games Milano 2026, echoing the sentiments of her friend and three-time world champion, Sakamoto Kaori.
“I admire her a lot because I saw her first Grand Prix, and it was so impressive,” remarked Hendrickx about Sakamoto, who has announced her last competitive season. Maintaining stellar consistency over the years, Sakamoto has proven to be a role model for many, including Hendrickx. “It’s a loss for figure skating that we will lose her after this season. We should be thankful for her contributions,” she emphasized.
As the competitive landscape evolves, Hendrickx acknowledged the physical and mental challenges of figure skating, especially for those approaching the tail end of their careers. “I don’t know where I will be after this season, but it might be the last.” Open to opportunities, Hendrickx has expressed interest in participating in shows post-retirement while noting the scarcity of performance opportunities in Europe.
Hendrickx’s journey to this point has been obstacle-laden, with a significant ankle surgery that sidelined her for much of the previous season. Her determination led her to compete in a crucial qualifying event in September, where she clinched a podium finish, securing Belgium’s spot for the upcoming Winter Olympics.
While acknowledging the slim chances of medaling, Hendrickx is focusing on enjoying her Olympic experience alongside Sakamoto, as this will mark their third Olympics together. “In my first Olympics, I didn’t completely grasp how special it was. I’ve learned to appreciate every moment now,” Hendrickx reflected, eager to fully engage with the experience.
Fans and fellow athletes alike eagerly await both Hendrickx’s performances and the shared moments between these two extraordinary competitors, highlighting the vibrant legacy of figure skating.
