As the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 draw near, British figure skaters Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson set their sights on making history. The dynamic duo aims to become Team GB’s first Olympic medalists in ice dance since the legendary Torvill and Dean.
Fear recently expressed excitement about serving as a Team GB flagbearer during the Opening Ceremony on February 6. “Lewis is so proud of me,” she noted, emphasizing their partnership. “I wouldn’t be here without Lewis; we are a team.” Fear added that as she waves the Union Jack, she feels a unique sense of representing not just herself, but their shared journey in ice dance.
The pair recently made headlines by clinching Britain’s first world medal in ice dance in over four decades. Currently sitting in fourth place heading into the free dance championships, the stakes are high, and so are their aspirations.
Reflecting on history, Fear and Gibson are keenly aware of the legacy left by Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. The couple last won a bronze medal at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics, a prelude to their golden legacy from Sarajevo 1984.
Gibson shared his hopes for their legacy: “I’d love for people to think of us as a couple who carved their own path.” He feels motivated by his long-cherished dream of representing Great Britain in figure skating which started over a decade ago, inspired by icons such as Stéphane Lambiel and Johnny Weir.
The journey hasn’t been without its pitfalls, with Gibson recalling their initial partnership fondly. “We were horrific.” But their “maybe a little delusional” ambitions consumed them, bringing them closer.
As Fear articulates her potential feelings on standing on the Olympic podium, she likens it to an out-of-body experience. “I’d be in disbelief but so happy and proud,” she said, highlighting the emotional weight of fulfilling a childhood dream.
