The 2025 Japan Figure Skating Championships held a dramatic twist as pair skaters Miura Riku and Kihara Ryuichi, reigning world and Grand Prix Final champions, withdrew from the free skating competition due to Miura’s dislocated shoulder. This announcement came from the Japan Skating Federation (JSF) following Miura’s injury during the warm-ups for the short program held on December 21.

Despite suffering this setback, Miura showcased her remarkable grit, competing through the pain in the short program where the duo clinched first place among three entries. While details regarding the severity of the injury remain unclear, it isn’t the first time Miura has dealt with shoulder pain, having faced similar issues since 2022.

Historically, participation in the Japan Nationals is crucial for selection to the Olympic Winter Games, set to unfold in Milano Cortina in 2026. However, the JSF does have provisions for extraordinary circumstances, allowing participation for past world champions even in light of injuries, thereby alleviating concerns over their Olympic hopes.

Pre-injury, Miura and Kihara were virtually guaranteed a spot on the Olympic team based on their impressive track record, leading many fans to speculate on their eligibility given this latest development.

With Miura and Kihara’s exit, Nagaoka Yuna and Moriguchi Sumitada seized the opportunity to earn their first national title, scoring a remarkable 215.30 points, surpassing Kagotani Ayumi and Honda Lucas Tsuyoshi, who finished with 133.47 points. In the ice dance competition, the duo of Yoshida Utana and Morita Masaya took first place as well, with a confident score of 172.29 against their competitors Kushida Ikura and Shimada Koshiro, who finished with 165.75 points.

Looking ahead, athletes’ participation in Milano Cortina will hinge on potential selections made by their respective National Olympic Committees, highlighting the ongoing tension and excitement leading into the Winter Games.
