Ice Dancer Michela Melillo Celebrates Her Mayan Culture As She Looks To Inspire Others Through Her Skating
Michela Melillo, a promising ice dancer, merges her profound passion for her Mayan heritage with her love for figure skating. From her very first moment at the iconic Ingalls Rink at Yale University, Melillo felt an undeniable connection to ice skating. “I stepped on the ice and I was like, ‘this is my sport,’” she recalls. Fast forward to her current journey, filled with passion and a sense of wonder that mirrors those early enchantments.
Born in Guatemala and adopted at merely six months old, Melillo recalls her arrival in Connecticut, blissfully unaware of the harsh winters ahead. “Skating felt like magic,” she reminisces. Training every morning before school shaped her earliest memories; the graceful way sunlight illuminated the rink during her solitary early morning sessions touched her deeply.
Now a freshman at the University of New Haven majoring in communications, Melillo continues to honor her cultural roots, performing diligently alongside her partner, Karl Schapfel. Together, their dynamic partnership recently shone at the National Qualifying Series in Henderson, Nevada, where they achieved a commendable seventh place in the senior division.
Her commitment goes beyond personal achievement. Melillo aims to tell engaging stories through their performances, emphasizing her pride and individuality on the ice. Despite being geographically challenged, training in Cromwell, Connecticut, with renowned coach Svetlana Kulikova helps refine their artistic expressions which celebrate her rich Mayan culture.
