Mexican figure skater Donovan Carrillo doing things “My Way” for Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic season
The Beijing 2022 Olympian is stepping out of his comfort zone this season to bring a biographical story that connects to his own on the ice. Donovan Carrillo’s program playlist strikes a different tone this year, as he has chosen to skate to Elvis Presley—a move that marks a new chapter for the Mexican figure skating star.
This season, Carrillo’s free skate features a medley of Elvis songs, opening with “My Way.” He aims to showcase this emotionally compelling program at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Games. First, however, he must secure a quota for Mexico at the 2025 ISU Skate to Milano Figure Skating Qualifier, an event set for September 18-21 in Beijing, where 17 spots, including five in men’s singles, are available.
Carrillo explained the emotional significance of the song for him. “Choosing this program was very emotional. It’s a song I’ve always wanted to skate to,” he said. Inspired by watching the biopic “Elvis,” he found a personal connection to Presley’s experiences, stating, “I feel like I may have experienced a little of that too.”
The program also presents a shift away from Carrillo’s traditional use of Latin music. His short program embraces Latin rhythms, featuring “Hip Hip Chin Chin,” while his free skate gives a unique twist to Presley’s legacy. “I believe that this Latin passion will help me deliver a different version of Elvis,” Carrillo remarked, ensuring he keeps his roots intact.
As excitement builds for the 2025 qualifier, Carrillo expressed enthusiasm about representing Mexico alongside fellow skaters Andrea Montesinos Cantu, Harlow Lynella Stanley, and Seiji Urano. “Being Latino helps me a lot in skating. Our passion and essence make a difference,” he proudly articulated.
With renewed ambition, Carrillo not only aims for Olympic success but also hopes to capture audiences with his Latin flair as he interprets musical icons on ice.
