Quadragenarian Deanna Stellato-Dudek out to prove “girls can play the backflip game” – but partner Maxime Deschamps needs some convincing

Canadian figure skater Deanna Stellato-Dudek is making waves in the world of professional figure skating as she sets her sights on the Olympic season. At the age of 42, she passionately advocates for the inclusion of a stunning backflip in her pairs program, challenging traditional norms within the sport.

Her partner, Maxime Deschamps, has had some reservations about the move, stating “Absolutely not” during their initial discussions. Stellato-Dudek, undeterred, presented alternatives that showcased her willingness to innovate, suggesting options to reduce risk while emphasizing the importance of this element. Featuring an assisted backflip in their routine goes beyond just the glitz; it represents a personal mission to highlight what female athletes can achieve in a male-dominated aspect of the sport.

The backflip was previously banned, keeping many female skaters from innovating in this way. However, with changes on the horizon and a surge of male athletes, including reigning world champion Ilia Malinin and two-time European champion Adam Siao Him Fa, the allure is returning. Stellato-Dudek affirms her intent, stating, “I wanted to show that the girls can play the backflip game just as good as the boys.”

With growing enthusiasm, Stellato-Dudek managed to earn Deschamps’ support after successfully landing the backflip in the gym during testing. This resulted in a transformation in their training plans, empowering the duo to integrate the impressive stunt into their routine.

In addition to their gravity-defying backflip, Stellato-Dudek unveils a captivating new style for the season: a hair-down approach modeled after the iconic Diana Ross. This fresh look has necessitated some adjustments, as long hair can pose challenges during routines. Nevertheless, with careful compromise, they are ready to showcase both power and grace as they head toward the 2025-26 season.

The pair prepares to debut their electrifying programs set to “Carmina Burana” for the short and a romantic selection by flamenco artist Vicente Amigo for the free skate. These additions underline their emotional connection and intent to impress at this critical stage, focusing on the 2026 Olympic Games in Milano Cortina.
