Winter Olympics 2026: Deanna Stellato-Dudek “feels pretty special” completing her Olympic dream

The journey to fulfill a lifelong dream is often filled with challenges, and for 42-year-old Canadian figure skater Deanna Stellato-Dudek, that journey culminated in an unforgettable performance at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 on February 16. After stepping away from the sport for 16 years, Stellato-Dudek has returned to professional figure skating with a dazzling routine that secured her a total score of 192.81 in the pairs event.

Teaming up with partner Maxime Deschamps, the duo had their eyes set high. Despite facing adversity with a challenging short program, they rebounded magnificently in the free skate, achieving a score of 126.57. Their impressive performance places them firmly in the medals race, holding third as two groups still awaited their turn.

“It feels pretty special,” Stellato-Dudek expressed in an emotional interview after their routine. “We did everything we could to make this dream come true for ourselves.” Her dream of participating in the Olympics traced back to her days as a top junior skater before a devastating injury in 2000 led her to retire.

Recently, Stellato-Dudek battled yet another injury that sidelined her before the Olympics, raising concerns about her participation in the team event. Through strategic coaching and intensive rehabilitation, she managed to return for the pairs event. “The injury was certainly not something we were expecting,” she remarked, crediting her partner for helping her through.

Stellato-Dudek’s story is one of perseverance and hope, highlighted in the Olympic Channel documentary Deanna’s Dream. The documentary chronicles her journey back to figure skating, inspiring fans globally. While many of her competitors are in their twenties, Stellato-Dudek’s age reflects an assertive vision and experience. “I think my age gives me a certain power,” she noted, emphasizing confidence cultivated through her unique life experience.

Skating to a beautiful Vicente Amigo medley while wearing an elite Oscar de la Renta-designed dress, the team showcased resilience and artistry. Although the side-by-side jumps posed challenges, their routine gained momentum, exhibiting their dedication and improvement. Deschamps echoed their feeling of pride, noting, “Tonight was just to go out there together, attack everything we could and do our best.” The pair continues to inspire fans as they integrate rich experience with Olympic spirit on the ice, completing a remarkable comeback story in the realm of professional figure skating.
