Ice dance cousins Anaëlle Kouevi and Yann Homawoo making their mark in figure skating
At just 15 and 16 years old, the dynamic ice dance duo from Virginia, USA, cousins Anaëlle Kouevi and Yann Homawoo, are already proving to be a force in the figure skating world. Since pairing up in 2019, they have quickly made a name for themselves in the competitive junior circuit, showcasing their talent and determination.
During a recent moment of urgency, Homawoo dashed to Kouevi’s home to fix a computer issue minutes before an important interview—demonstrating just how close these two truly are. Their bond has strengthened over the years, with every training session kick-started by a fist bump to affirm their unity on and off the ice.
The 2025-26 season is glimmering with achievements. The pair has experienced their first international competitions and successfully navigated their transition from novice to junior level. Notably, meeting ice dance icon Franklyn Singley left a profound impact on both skaters as they aim to represent the African American community in a sport still lacking in diversity.
Homawoo’s journey into ice dancing ignited at a birthday party when he laced up skates for the first time at the tender age of seven. Alongside Kouevi, they formed their ice dance team to pursue their passions while solidifying their close bond.
During training, the cousins have discovered more about each other—Kouevi admires Homawoo’s relentless drive and ambition. Together, they prove that while familial ties set them apart, their unique identity further distinguishes them in an often homogeneous field.
This year saw them experiment with musical themes that celebrate their culture. They deftly integrate styles into routines, using songs like “Jump” by Kriss Kross, culminating in a captivating program that captivated audiences and judges alike. With their innovative spins and astonishing choreography, they are redefining ice dance expectations.
As they prepare for the 2026 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Kouevi and Homawoo aim higher. Their ultimate goal? To leave a lasting mark on the sport that inspires others. “We want to captivate everyone with our performance, drawing focus to our creativity and vitality,” shared Homawoo. This illuminating journey for these cousins is just a glimpse into what the future holds for them in the world of professional figure skating.
