Former child actor Cha Junhwan gets role of a lifetime as Republic of Korea’s “figure skating prince”

Figure skating was initially a pathway for child actor Cha Junhwan to land new roles. However, it has led him to a much deeper passion: becoming the face of competitive skating in the Republic of Korea, also earning him the title “figure skating prince.” Now at 23, he’s participated in two Olympic editions and secured numerous prestigious medals.

Despite the focus on the ice, Cha maintains his artistic spirit through fashion shoots and TV appearances, balancing his theatrical roots with his athletic pursuits. “I’m the same person on the stage and off the stage,” he reflected. “The audience’s energy amplifies my enjoyment.”

A key highlight of Cha’s career was his Olympic debut at PyeongChang 2018, finishing 15th in the men’s singles. Four years later, he showcased his skills at Beijing 2022, where he ultimately placed fifth. Cha made history in 2023, becoming the first male skater from his country to earn a world medal with silver at the 2023 ISU World Figure Skating Championships.

Cha’s defining moment on the ice comes from his signature move: the Ina Bauer, which evokes profound cheers from the audience. He says, “Skating encompasses the unique storytelling aspect, allowing us to share emotions.” His layered performances have made great impressions, and fans feel their connection to his movement.

Fashion and figure skating are deeply intertwined for Cha. Working with designer Bae Kyongsool, he brings charisma into his costume choices, reshaping perspectives with remarkable designs every season. Recently, he earned a nomination at the 2025 ISU Figure Skating Awards for his innovative costumes that add dimension to his artistry.

Cha plans to march into future competitions with ambitious mixes of music styles. His range fluctuates from classical pieces to tracks by Imagine Dragons. “I want my performance to resonate differently each season,” he enthused. Looking ahead to Milano Cortina 2026, he is determined to immerse himself in the entire Olympic experience once again.
