Finally healthy, Canada’s Stephen Gogolev finds ‘new energy and love’ for skating
Stephen Gogolev was once the next big Canadian hope in men’s figure skating, though in recent years struggled to stay on competitive ice. After his season was cut short last December, he decided to give it “one last try.” It’s a decision he doesn’t regret.
Stephen Gogolev contemplated hanging up his skates after facing years of setbacks. A once-prominent figure in Canadian men’s figure skating, the young prodigy captivated audiences by landing triple axels at the tender age of 10. However, a significant growth spurt, coupled with recurring back injuries, thwarted his meteoric rise. Following the recent end to his competitive season in December, Gogolev, now 20, faced a crossroads. He admitted, “I definitely had those thoughts,” recalling the frustration of an uncertain future. Ultimately, he decided to commit to one last attempt to reclaim his skating career, a choice that is paying off handsomely.
Gogolev transcended expectations by clinching his first senior gold medal at the Nebelhorn Trophy on September 26 in Oberstdorf, Germany. He dominated both the short and long programs, achieving personal bests and a total score of 255.06 points—an impressive result that would have ranked him 11th at last season’s world championships. “A very special moment, coming back from injuries and being healthy again,” he shared, emphasizing the magnitude of this achievement.
After a prolonged rest from the ice, Gogolev returned to training with renewed vigor, guided by his coach, Lee Barkell. Turning setbacks into motivation, Gogolev has unlocked a revitalized approach to performance. His other coach, Benoit Richaud, has noted Gogolev’s transformation, stating, “His expression is back; it’s beautiful to see.” Currently experiencing an extended period of consistent training, Gogolev is excited about the future, with Skate Canada International on the horizon in Saskatoon from October 31 to November 2.
With aspirations set on the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics, Gogolev’s journey signals a promising comeback for Canadian figure skating. As he moves forward, his eyes remain fixed on mastering the highest levels of the sport.
