ISU Four Continents Championships 2026: Aoki Yuna captures women’s crown
The Japanese figure skater Aoki Yuna orchestrated a stunning upset, posting personal best scores in both the short and free programs to claim her first ISU Four Continents Championships crown in Beijing on January 23rd. Her remarkable performance contributed to a podium sweep for Japan, with teammates Nakai Ami and Chiba Mone finishing second and third, respectively.
Aoki exhibited extraordinary composure and technical precision throughout her routines, highlighted by a breathtaking free program that elevated her from second place to the top spot. The 24-year-old showcased a significant improvement, increasing her free program score by nearly 20 points to achieve an impressive 145.98.
On the preceding day, she also dazzled the judges with a lifetime best in the short program, culminating in a total winning score of 217.39—a remarkable 22-point improvement over her previous personal record. The competition saw Aoki open her routine with a stunning triple Lutz and triple loop combination, effectively emphasizing her technical prowess.
Despite Nakai Ami holding nearly a two-and-a-half-point lead going into the free program, she encountered difficulties with a fall on her opening triple Axel, a mistake that ultimately cost her the top position. After making a commendable recovery, Nakai settled for the silver medal with a score of 215.78.
The bronze medalist, Chiba Mone, rounded out an outstanding showing for Japan with a total score of 202.23. Meanwhile, American skater Bradie Tennell amazed spectators by producing back-to-back personal bests, catapulting her from seventh after the short program to a strong fourth place finish with 199.37.
As the ISU Four Continents Championships serves as a pivotal season highlight, Nakai and Chiba have secured spots on Japan’s squad for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, with Aoki named as an alternate. This competition marks a crucial final preparation before their Olympic journey.
