Figure skating: Amber Glenn returns to the scene of her golden Grand Prix climb at Cup of China
Amber Glenn had experienced success on the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series, but last season’s performance was unprecedented. Going a remarkable three-for-three, she clinched victories at both her assignments before ultimately winning the Grand Prix Final. This feat marked a milestone for U.S. figure skating, as she became the first U.S. woman to achieve this since Alissa Czisny in 2010.
“I’ve struggled with some impostor syndrome – ‘Oh, no, no, that’s not me’ – but I’m just happy that my hard work is finally showing,” said Glenn, reflecting on her astonishing success in Grenoble, France. Her gold medal victory notably came against tough competition, including reigning world champion Sakamoto Kaori, who finished in bronze.
This weekend, from October 24-26, the 25-year-old skater returns to the Cup of China, marking the start of her competitive journey for the 2024 season—a place significant not only for its memories from last year but also as the venue for her Grand Prix debut in 2017.
Fast-forward eight years, and Glenn is recognized among the elite in women’s figure skating. She recently kicked off her Olympic season by winning the Nebelhorn Trophy, where she debuted her short program to Madonna’s “Like a Prayer”—a move that delighted her supporters.
Glenn maintains a fan-favorite program with her free skate, a medley featuring “I Will Find You” and “The Return,” both of which helped her shine through last season and placed her among the top contenders at the 2025 World Championships.
Despite facing setbacks, including finishing ninth in the short program, Glenn rebounded to secure fifth overall, expressing her pride in her performance—even as she aspired to greater conclusions than that season brought.
As Glenn steps into her third Olympic season, the competition is fierce. The battle for three coveted U.S. Olympic spots at Milano Cortina 2026 is heating up with Alysa Liu, Isabeau Levito, Glenn, and former U.S. champion Bradie Tennell all in contention. Who will rise amidst this extraordinarily competitive field?
Expectations are high as the Cup of China approaches, with Glenn aiming to go golden again. More critically, she hopes to make her long-cherished Olympic debut. This weekend’s performances will be telling as the dream unfolds.
