Alysa Liu on the story behind the naming of Team USA’s “Blade Angels”
For fans of U.S. women’s figure skating, the new nickname “Blade Angels” promises to be a melodious blend of art and athleticism, thanks to star skater Alysa Liu. The 2025 world champion light-heartedly took responsibility for this catchy title during a media session on February 2 at the Milano Cortina 2026 official training.
If you think the name is fantastic, praise Liu; if not, she wittingly quipped, “It wasn’t my idea.” This trio of tenacious skaters—Alysa Liu, Amber Glenn, and Isabeau Levito—comprise a stellar generation for American figure skating, riding a high wave of success. Liu recently claimed the world title, Glenn earned the prestigious Grand Prix Final in 2024, and Levito brought home a silver medal from Worlds. Thus, their bond seems as strong as their talents.
On the day they were designated to the Olympic team, their group chat buzzed with excitement, spurring a clever brainstorming session for a team name. Liu disclosed that Isabeau had her heart set on “Powerpuff Girls,” while Amber suggested a few names that lost significance over time in Liu’s memory. The result? Blade Angels emerged after a round of voting.
Liu also humorously mentioned another naming option: “Babes of Glory.” However, due to copyright concerns, that one didn’t make the cut!
The energy seems positive and relaxed as they prepare for competitions, especially with the women’s singles events scheduled for February 17 and 19. Interestingly, Liu and Glenn have already visited the competition venue, sparking speculation on their event lineup. Liu joked about signing an NDA, keeping the audience on their toes regarding who performs what.
In a testament to her adaptability, Liu will revert to her acclaimed MacArthur Park free skate program instead of the Lady Gaga medley from the recent U.S. Championships, where she secured silver. Boo on Gaga, but Liu’s got a fashionable new dress to debut with both her programs, creating buzz as well.
A seasoned skater now at 20, the youthful grace that Liu exhibited at Beijing 2022 cements her as a fan favorite. With smiles, she reminisces about personal updates in Milano. Wearing a fresh hairstyle and discovering new maps to delectable Italian treats like chocolate lava cake for breakfast hormonal shifts uplift her already buoyant spirit.
As the Milano Ice Skating Arena gearing up for the competition, the “Blade Angels” gear up not just in spirit, but in artistry reflected in their skating routines. Stay tuned for what these mesmerizing talents will bring to the Beijing stage!
